Description: http://nakedgord.blogspot.com/2006/11/cbcs-fifth-estate-denial-machine.html From CBC.ca: THE DENIAL MACHINE In the past few years, a hurricane has engulfed the debate about global warming. This scientific issue has become a rhetorical firestorm with science pitted against spin and inflammatory words on both sides. Some scientists believe that global warming will not be devastating to the planet. How could scientific fact, which many believe could determine the very future of the planet, become a political battleground, pitting left versus right, environmentalist versus climate change sceptic? Global warming: potential costs? A recent British report estimates that the projected costs of global warming to be as costly as both world wars and the Great Depression added together. Yet, with such consequences, some scientists still insist that climate change, if it is happening at all, could be a good thing. The Denial Machine investigates the roots of the campaign to negate the science and the threat of global warming. It tracks the activities of a group of scientists, some of whom previously consulted for for Big Tobacco, and who are now receiving donations from major coal and oil companies. Who is keeping the debate of global warming alive? The documentary shows how fossil fuel corporations have kept the global warming debate alive long after most scientists believed that global warming was real and had potentially catastrophic consequences. It shows that companies such as Exxon Mobil are working with top public relations firms and using many of the same tactics and personnel as those employed by Phillip Morris and RJ Reynolds to dispute the cigarette-cancer link in the 1990s. Exxon Mobil sought out those willing to question the science behind climate change, providing funding for some of them, their organizations and their studies. The Denial Machine also explores how the arguments supported by oil companies were adopted by policy makers in both Canada and the U.S. and helped form government policy. |

Davinc ::: Favorites The structure of the IPCC is the problem. They get funding for predicting nightmares. Look into the proposals for stopping CO2 increases you will find they do little to stop CO2 (which are ONLY caused in the long run by burning oil and coal). If you believe in CO2 warming PLEASE focus your energy on holding those acting on it accountable. They are hijacking environmentalism for world government. Focus them on taxing wellhead/coal mine output, not how much beef we eat and how many kids we have. 07-08-09 12:25:16 __________________________________________________
legjoints ::: Favorites I've not seen Gore's video, but I've read the summary of the latest IPCC report and that for me carries far more weight that things on websites. Research on the internet can be entertaining, but it's a dangerous thing when you're trying to reach the truth. Much better to read peer-reviewed scientific journals. If you do that you will find there is a virtual consensus that global warming is caused by our burning of fossil fuels. 07-08-09 09:42:17 __________________________________________________
Davinc ::: Favorites Indeed, making assumptions about the weather for political purposes is VERY dangerous. Weather in PDX wasn't my point, the sun moving into a calmer period was. Local weather was just an anecdote. Consider this... a few years ago they predicted an ice age and even sprinkling ash on the ice caps to melt them. Had we all listened... ? All I ask is for people to turn off the emotions and take a moment to breath before creating scary world govt to solve a problem that may not be solvable. 07-08-07 11:17:36 __________________________________________________
Davinc ::: Favorites You missed my point then. I have read all of the arguments for and against CO2 induced climate change. I believed Gore's video when I first saw it, and even encouraged friends to watch it. It was my research on the web that led me to find that his distortions were not at all minor and that the science is in fact questionable. I don't say these things because I take money from oil companies (who by the way would not lose a dime as a result of any of the 'solutions' Gore and company offer up. 07-08-07 11:11:43 __________________________________________________
legjoints ::: Favorites Davinc, you say "We are a cooling cycle for the sun now," which makes no sense to me, but I think it is very dangerous to make assumptions about global climate trends based on how hot or cold it is in Portland - by which I assume you mean Portland, Oregon. This is global warming we're talking about here, not American warming. You need to look at trends across the whole world, not just in your own back yard. 07-08-07 05:42:32 __________________________________________________
legjoints ::: Favorites Davinc, you say "You think you are the first person to bring up feedback?" No, of course not. You asked the question and I gave an answer as best I could in the limited space provided here. You can find much fuller answers on the web or in peer-reviewed scientific journals if you're really interested. 07-08-07 05:29:18 __________________________________________________
Davinc ::: Favorites You think you are the first person to bring up feedback? We are a cooling cycle for the sun now, so we will see in the next few years probably who was right. Going to be a lot of silence coming from the CO2 believers if weather takes a turn for the cooler (which here in Portland it has). 07-08-06 22:02:32 __________________________________________________
legjoints ::: Favorites A really excellent video. Worth watching whether you're a denier or not. 07-08-06 20:42:47 __________________________________________________
legjoints ::: Favorites Davinc - "and why CO2 levels rise AFTER warming occurs" Positive feedback. A small increase in temperature can cause an increase in CO2 which in turn causes an increase in temperature, and so on, as happened in the warming periods of the past. But now it is the increase in CO2 put into the atmosphere by humans that is driving the increase in temperature which will result in further increases in CO2... 07-08-06 19:30:56 __________________________________________________
legjoints ::: Favorites Davinc - "Wish I could get words, this one is just silence and a still image for me." You need to go to the URL contained in the title. Davinc - "Unless it answers the question as to why every planet in our system is warming" It isn't. 07-08-06 19:28:55 __________________________________________________ |
